The Iceland Spar/Optical Calcite in magick and healing

    The Calcite mineral/crystal is the most stable polymorphous form of the Calcium carbonate (common limestone), and is created from the amorphous precursor, that is poorly arranged CaCO3. It’s most commonly transparent to mildly opaque, but can occur in variety of other colors. It has white streak, hardness number 3 on the Moss’ scale and vitreous to pearly luster.

     The clear Quartz variety (which this article will deal with),  that is the single crystals of Clear Quartz variety known as “Iceland Spar” exhibit a not so common property of birefringence, or double refraction. That is, it can slip the rays of light in two, hence objects observed to it may appear as doubled. [1]

     While not hidrosolubile, like most other Calcium carbonate varieties, it dissolves in acids, even the diluted ones. Some optically active Iceland spars, may if dipped in water for too long, develop certain dull lines in specific spots and thus become more opaque in appearance, as opposed to the usual transparent ones.

     It’s found and mined pretty much worldwide, and is readily available in the crystal shops most of the time.

but such specimens are not Clear Calcite/Iceland Spar
and have properties of the Yellow Calcite and properties of Optical Calcite

 

Use in crystal therapy

     The uses of Calcite in healing, on all the levels of the being (physical, ethereal, mental, emotional according to crystal therapy) are generally uniform for all the varieties of the stone, some having additional uses due to their colour.

     In that sense, for example, the Blue Calcite acts as blood pressure regulator, that is it lowers the heightened blood pressure, releases pain and soothes the nerves, physically and mentally. The Green one is really good in treatment of fevers, inflammations, such as arthritis, cleans the body from the bacteria, treats burns and regulates the activity of the adrenal glands. The red one, for example, is very good for curing the    constipation. The clear calcite is very good for treating eyes, improving eyesight, inspiring growth (both on spiritual and physical level) and clearing the mind. [2]

     All of the Calcites, regardless of the colour, will improve the following physiological processes and treat the following conditions:

·         Helps absorption of Calcium into the bones, dissolves calcifications (pathological ones), strengthens the joints and bones in general. It’s very helpful in securing the healthy and proper development of skeletal tissue/system in kids.

·         Helps cleaning the excretory organs/systems

·         Helps blood coagulation and tissue healing and regeneration

·         Relieves migraine

·         Heals the eyes

·         Removes tension

     The last three are particularly associated with the Clear / Optical Calcite or Iceland Spar, even though that all the Calcite exhibit those properties.

     Crystal essence / elixir made from the Clear Calcite / Iceland Spar, is a considered a cure-all, that is it energizes and cleanses physical and spiritual bodies, kick-starts the healing process, and is excellent to treat the digestive system conditions and skin conditions topically. The Essence made from the Yellow or Golden calcite* is refreshing, energizing and said to broaden the spiritual awareness.

     Mentally, it’s very useful in the studying process, as it strengthens the memory, analytic skills and helps to filter relevant from irrelevant information. It dissolves the stress, replacing it with the serenity. It defeats laziness, and helps one restore faith in themselves. [3]

Use in magick

     Clear Calcite, and particularly the optical variety, is used in magick, to double the strength of spells [4] or otherwise empower magickal and spiritual work. For these purposes it’s either held during ritual and spell work or placed on altars.

     It can also bring clarity of the mind, better understanding of abstract concepts and ideas, such as omens, visions, peculiar dreams and so on. When mediated with or worn, or placed under pillow, it can induce visions, and premonitions, and it will raise spiritual awareness.

     Some people place Optical calcite in over their wallets, or on top of some money to entice it to “to grow” multiplying by two, constantly, in a way.

     It’s believed to be able to “draw the light” into the soul. This use could be associated with the belief that it was a stone that the Vikings used for navigation on cloudy days, due to the stone’s effect of polarization. In that sense, it’s still believe to be helpful in helping the soul find the light, and spirituality, and even curing the “susto” ( “Soul loss” ) by bringing it back to the body, although for the last, the black Calcite is used.

     There is a somewhat old belief (the stone’s use in magick is relatively young, compared to many of the stones used in magickal work) that it can cast illusions. For such purposes the stone had to undergo specific ritual preparations, such to be left in the graveyard during the night of the Full Moon, and be rubbed with juice of the Belladonna, among other.

    Being that it’s a good stone for communication and understanding notions with double meaning, it’s suitable for Truth spells as well. Finally, it’s held to me magickally curative as well, hence why it’s essence is believed to be a sort of a cure all.

     Here are some of the magickal correspondences for the Clear (and Optical) Calcite:

·         Planetary ruler: Moon

·         Elemental ruler: Water

·         Numerical correspondence: 8

·         Energy: receptive

·         Birthstone of: Cancer

·         Time of the Year: Imbolc, Blue moon* 

·         Angelic ruler: Gabriel the Archangel

To empower spells, and gain spiritual power

     Place a piece of Optical Calcite on your altar during your spiritual work. For this purpose it really goes well with the Amber and Spectrolite, so you can combine them. You can arrange them in an auspicious pattern, such as pentagram, if using more stones, or you can place a piece on a plate alongside a purple or white candle, dressed with the “Master key” oil, and an old skeleton key, and a piece of your own hair, nail,  or drop of your own blood, and burn daily and pray for increased spiritual powers.

Physical body change spell

     There is a spell,  prominently circulating on the internet, used to help change body  part, or the shape of the body in general. While some may struggle with the notion of it being even possible, the spell is basically programing a crystal, to do a specific magickal work. Being that the crystal atoms are organized in a uniform patter, making nearly perfect, symmetric geometrical figures as they grow, this makes perfect sense. It’s a matter of transfer magick. The original spell uses Quartz  Crystal, but being that Iceland Spar work on bones, muscles and helps growth where needed, I think that the Iceland Spar, particularly those cut into cubes or rhombs are ideal for this type of spell. I’d also suggest burning an orange candle when performing the spell for the first time, and each day afterwards, a bit until it’s burnt all the way down.

     The spell instructions are as follow, just replace Quartz with the Iceland Spar:

“Procedure: Take the small piece of paper and write your name on it. Draw on it what body or body part you want changed and what you want it to look like. The picture could show the entire body or just the part.

Now hold the paper in your hands and imagine the body/part changing from what it looks like now to what you want it to look like.

Then fold it up any way you like and tie it to the crystal. Then once more visualize the body part changing.

Put it away and every evening until the body is changed take it out and visualize it changing again.

When the change is done tear the paper up and scatter it to the wind.

This spell is very good for changing aspects you don't like. It took a few days to see results so don't expect an over nighter” [6]

 

The White essence

     My personal formula for a cure-all type of potion with Clear Calcite**

     Using spring water, create an essence with the Clear Quartz and the clear Calcite Crystals. Strain. Add some Holy Water. Read the Psalm 142^nd over it. Drink some to heal, remove pain and restore health and energy.

Chiastolite, the stone of transformation and spiritual protection

     Chiastolite is a naturally occurring mineral, a form of Andalusite ( Al₂SiO5 ), and is easily distinguishable by it’s black, cross shaped, inclusions of graphite. Most of the time it’s a brownish-gray in color, sometimes with dark red parts as well, and when cut in halves ( the natural specimens ) once can clearly see the cross pattern inside.

     The very name, originates from the Greek “chiastos” which means, “cross marked”, [1] and also “cruciform” or “crosswise”. It’s hardness on the Mohs’ scale is 6.5-7.5 , the strike is white, and the luster is vitreous. It can withstand high temperatures,  without alteration,  and is for this reason used    high-temperature resistant ceramics and refractories. The faceted specimens exhibit the pleichroic effect ( “change” color depending on the angle from which they are observed )  and are for this reason valued among jewelers, and used in the jewelry. [2]

Use in magick

     This auspicious natural talisman, has been used in healing and magick, for hundreds of years, already. It was believed to be a sign, or even gift from G’d, and it was, and still is, reverend as an amulet that negates curses and hexes. Today, it’s  also frequently  used to shield from, and fence off, psychic attacks. So it’s a powerful stone for spiritual protection, or, it’s a protective agent per excellence, especially against harmful magick.

     It is also a very spiritual stone, that both, uplifts spiritually, but grounds those that hold it, preventing that the spiritual experience gets the best of them. What more, it’s said to ground a spiritual experience, or insight, making it more understandable and permanent. 

     According to renowned author and crystal-therapist Judy Hall, the stone is a gateway to the mysteries as well. It facilitates astral projection, and helps people understand and explore the immortal   nature of souls. It is related to death, and rebirth, and is believed to ease the transition of the soul form physical to other planes, thus helping those who are passing away. The stone    can provide answers to mysterious events and occurrences. [3]

     It’s an inspirational, and creative stone, which also boosts analytical faculties, and aptness in solving problems, which is connected to its use in crystal therapy.

     It has the power to turn the conflict into harmony, and to dispel negative thoughts, sensations, and energy. That’s the majestic transformation power of the stone, to turn the negative into positive.

     Additionally, it’s said to unite and draws elemental forces, due to the cross pattern, most likely, empowering thus spiritual work, and magickal rituals and spells.  [4] This is why people sometimes place it on their altars.

      It’s also seen as a stone of good luck, and is believed by many to be  an amulet against the  evil eye, or the glance of malice 

     It also has power to turn the  calm confronted people, and turn conflict situations into more productive ones. Hence why it could be useful to carry to  workplace , if the colleagues tend to argue.

     Like any other stone/crystal/mineral  , Chiastolite is also associated with planets, it “vibrates” with certain numerical value, and it channels energy, projecting or drawing it ( in this case, the stone is versatile, so it both receives and projects energies, equally well ), and here are some of the correspondences for the stone:

·        * Planetary ruler: Various, Saturn

·         *Elemental ruler: Various, or all  the 4 classical elements

·         *Numerical correspondence: 7

·        * Energy: receptive and projective

·        * Birthstone of: Libra and Virgo [5]

·        * Time of year* : Samhain and Lammas

Use in crystal therapy

    

     Chiastolite has relatively broad spectrum of “prescriptions” in regards of treating  somatic and psychological aliments, and some of the suggestions are as follow:

     “Healers use chiastolite to lessen fevers, rheumatism, balance the immune system, fortify nerves, and increase lactation in nursing mothers.” [6]

     It’s also said to increase ability to solve problems, find different approaches and solutions to them , or to conquer them using analytical faculties, which the stone greatly enhances. It also dispels fear, illusions, and non-functional, old, thought-patterns. It reduces excess of acid in organism, and is said to be able to repair chromosome damages, and even treat paralysis.  [7]

    It’s empowers any chakra, if laid over it  , and it’s extremely efficient in repairing auric damages, and filling up auric holes etc.

Spells and rituals

Dispel negative elements     

     Create an elixir with spring water and Chiastolite. Add to it few drops of Holy water, and a smallest pinch of salt. A drop of Camphor essential oil may be added as well,  or a pinch of finely powdered / pulverized Vervain, If You feel so inclined, but  it’s certainly not necessary

     Now either put it in a spray bottle, and spray around the place that is disturbed with negative vibration, has “thick” air, or feels extremely “wrong” , or pour it into a ceramic lamp, light a candle and let it diffuse and dispel negative elements, replacing them with creativity and harmony.

Charm of spiritual aid

     When someone is in dire need of spiritual assistance, of the benevolent spirits, due to some misfortune, trauma or illness, combine in a purple mojo bag:

·       *   Chiastolite

·       *   Aquamarine

·       *  Altaea roots, or Star Anise seeds

     And dress the bag with “Spirit guide” or “Healing” condition oils. Any of the spiritual colognes, such as Florida water, or Kanaga water will also do just fine. Hold the bag in hands, light a white, purple or beeswax candle and pray, and ask the spirits to help. Leave the bag, alongside candle, glass of water and some fresh mint leaves on the altar until the candle burns all the way down.

     Then the candle can be given to the person in  question, or even slipped underneath their   mattress, to draw help of kind spirits.

** My own suggestion, I have not been able to found any association of the Cross stone, with any of the Angels or Archangels in the sources available to me. But the colors, shapes, properties of the Stone resonate with the two mentioned Archangels, strongly.

Carnelian magick

“Carnelian is  an energy booster. It helps the insecure person to find the strength within them so they can come into their own.  It is said to increase the appetite”

Carnelian  ( also spelt “cornelian” ) is a mineral, a variety of chalcedony, containing iron oxide, similar  to the Sard.  Carnelian is translucent, transparent or opaque.  Mohs’ scale hardness is 7, the streak is white and the formula is SiO2 , silica. [1]

It’s a beautiful red or orange stone, often used as semi-precious stone in jewelry, as cabochon, or otherwise cut and polished.

In it’s tumbled form, It’s  rather inexpensive and easy to come by. It’s found in India, Brazil, Siberia, South America and Germany.  [2]  It can appear as pale orange-pink, orange, red, or nearly black variety. If it appears banded then it’s also considered an Agate.

Following are some magickal correspondences  of the Carnelian based on cross referencing various book and online sources ( look credits/ footnotes ) :

A beautiful, Carnelian skull

In magick, Onyx is used for various purposes. Akin to it’s use in crystal therapy, it is  used to regenerate, renew, rekindle the spark in someone, give them courage and bravery, motivate someone and uplift them.  It can be used to clean other stones.

In ancient Eastern cultures it was used in burial rituals and ceremonies, and was often buried alongside the deceased, as a protective talisman for them, like in Egypt and India.  Today, it’s often used to remove fear of dying. [5] In these cultures it was also a symbol of prestige, wealthy and noble people could afford  to get and wear Carnelian jewelry, and they were buried with it.

“In Renaissance magic the carnelian was engraved with a sword, or an image of a warrior. Then, this magical amulet was placed in the home to guard it from lightning and storms, and carried as a protectant against enchantments.” [6] writes the late Sir  Scott Cunningham, in his book on crystals.

It’s used to magickally protect from insanity, skin diseases and nose bleed, and is used in spell to promote and entice love and passion.  In Ancient Egypt it was believed that merely holding a piece of Carnelian in hand, would quell anger, jealousy, hate and other negative feelings. In fact, it calms the temper and instills peace.

It’s believed to be a  powerful talisman against telepathic ( mind ) invasion.   Carnelian can be used in healing magick, often the Carnelian wands are used for the purpose, placed on neck or carried for eloquence, sometimes as a ring, or simply in a pocket.  

It’s also a powerful protective stone particularly against psychic attack, evil eye and hostile ghosts ( with Ruby and Chlorite ) , c ollapsing buildings and falling walls , storms and lighting [7]

In crystal therapy

Carnelian corresponds to the second chakra, and is hence sometimes used to cure infertility, and/or frigidity.  But primarly, it’s a stone of revitalization and regeneration that infuses one with energy, motivates, removes constrictive mental patterns, non-constructive  self – inhibition,  and inspires persistency.  It gives strength and bravery to timid and meek,  removes weakness. It also cleanses the perception and  sharpens analytic faculties and skills. 

It used to heal problems with lower backs and spine, rheumatism, arthritis, neuralgia, depression, CFS, weak kidneys. Carnelian filters the blood, thickens it, especially when needed to stop hemorrhage. Romans were known to apply it to the outer of the nose, when they had a violent nosebleed, as it was said to stop  the nosebleed rapidly and  gently.  In crystal therapy it is also used to help absorption of vitamins and minerals , and to increase blood circulation/flow to deprived organs.

It is placed where needed or on second chakra, but should always touch the skin, for the best therapeutic effect.  Pink-orange Carnelian also helps to renew and heal the parent-child relation, particularly after arguments, molestation and manipulation.

Renewal and regeneration spell

To restore strength, willpower, and virility, to gain more energy  and power

Take eight candles, white, red, or 4 white and 4 red, and set them so they mark the edge of a circle, large enough for You to comfortably sit in. 

Take a piece of cleansed and charged Carnelian, and sit in the circle. Light the candles clockwise, and when lighting each one say:

“For renewal and power!”

Then holding the crystal in hands, sitting comfortably,  say:

“Renova, repara,

Virtutem et potentiam

Nervum et manum,

Cor sanum , obstinata mente,

 et  puram, fortem animam

dona mihi¹ Domine

cum Luce  iste,

et cum lapide iste ,

sana, reintegra, et confirma me²

Te rogo Domine !

Amen!

If done for other human beings change the marked words in verse to : 1 hoc homini, 2 hoc hominem , instead of “mihi” and “me”

Sit for awhile more, meditating on empowerment, holding the stone in Your hands. If You can sit until the candles burn all the way down,  it would be brilliant, so You can use very small candles.  If You’re doing spell for someone who is very ill or exhausted, place them in circle, give them the Carnelian or place it on their sacral chakra,  and leave them inside the circle until the candles burn all the way down. Obviously, the circle can be made around the bed of the person.

Afterwards, carry the crystal with You, making sure to properly maintain it ( cleanse and charge, at least every 15 days ) , to empower You.

Carry to energize Yourself, empower, harmonize nervous system,  help You see and attain opportunities, and remove blockages. It’s also good for eloquence, and to be placed bellow pillow to remove nightmares and ensure restful sleep.

"Home Protection"

This spell comes from the wonderful book by Gerina Dunwich, "Dunwich's Guide to Gemstone Sorcery"  

To protect your home (whether it be a house or an apartment) against lightning strikes and destructive storms, keep a piece of carnelian (preferably one engraved with the image of a man holding a sword) on one of your windowsills as an amulet of magickal protection. Anoint the stone once a week with a drop of protection oil and thrice repeat the following incantation over it while visualizing your intent:

Stone of Fire, ruled by Sun,

Let no harm by storm be done.

Ward this home from Nature’s furies,

Keep those in it free from worries.

As it is willed, so mote it be! [8]

Black Onyx magick

“Within every onyx is imprisoned an evil nocturnal demon

that causes terror and nightmares to plague any unfortunate

individual who wears this stone to bed or sleeps within its

range of influence, according to ancient gemstone legend.”

Onyx is a mineral that occurs in various colors, though we will be discussing the  black variety here. 

Natural black Onyx with stripes

Onyx is a variety of chalcedony, and is cryptocrystalline, “consisting of fine   intergrowths of the silica minerals quartz and morganite” [1]  We can distinguish  it from Agate, it’s close “relative” ( another variety of chalcedony , which can also occur in similar colors ) by stripes, which appear  in ( natural ) Onyx ,  and are parallel, as opposed  to concentric,  or even chaotic ones that occur in Agate.  Another common form/variey is Sardonyx, which is yellow-brown-orange-ish in color with white stripes, which sometimes You can find  labeled as Yellow Onyx, or Brown Onyx, also Marble Onyx.

On the Moss’ scale, Onyx is said to have 6.5 units firmness ( durability), and the streak is white.

As a semi-precious stone it is very popular among jewelers and  people who buy  and wear jewelry.

When You’re looking to get an Onyx stone, caution is needed though. More so when searching for black Onyx.  Some  of what people offer as Black Onyx is actually a low quality Agate, painted black to look  like it.

Even the common Black Onyxes most of us own, and use in crystal therapy or magick,  are cooked either in honey, oil or sugar syrup, so that the organic matters  infiltrate spaces between microcrystal structures  and give it black tone. After that it’s boiled  in Sulphuric acid  to make the color permanent.  [2]

Now let’s proceed with therapeutic and magickal qualities of Onyx  

Black Onyx in  crystal therapy

On a physical level, Onyx is extremely useful in healing  conditions related to teeth, bones, feet , bone marrow and blood. [3]

It corresponds to root chakra.

Psychologically,  Onyx is a wonderful mental tonic, that helps overcome longstanding conditions of grief, mourning and sorrow.  It helps integrate different aspects ( particularly those negative )  of personality, into personality as whole, and accept them.

It’s an advising  and guiding stone, that helps in difficult time by supporting, and providing  that priceless gift of wisdom,  discernment, and  also helps make the right choices.

Worn around neck it inspires chastity and reduces libido.

 It was once taught that Onyx can be used to prevent premature childbirth, as well  to ease the process itself, when placed on the body [4]

It’s also said to sharpens the senses ,  fortifies  self confidence and strengthens healthy egoism [5]

A German Saint and mystic Hildegard fon Bingen, in her work “De Physica” suggest placing Onyx for a while in mouths , when heavily depressed or tormented mentally, and the stone is said to remove these feelings rather swiftly, but it must then  be cleansed thoroughly.  She  had also suggested   using it in wine to treat swollen glands, as You can see from the  example bellow.

Black Onyx in magick and sorcery

Onyx, as well as jewelry made from it can be worn as amulet to ward off misfortune, protect from evil magick, instill bravery and grant spiritual wisdom.

Here are the correspondences associated with this enticing stone:

·                 Planetary ruler –   Saturn and/or Mars

·                  Elemental ruler – Fire

·                 Numerical correspondence – 6

·                  Energy – projective

·                 Birthstone of  -  Capricorn, Leo

·                  Time of Year* –  Samhain, July ( according to Hebrew  teachings ) and January ( Agripa )

·                Angelic  ruler – Gabriel ( according to Agripa )

Onyx can be used in persuasion and controlling magick, as well as affecting someone’s sleep, which  had to do with it’s Saturnian/al  nature.

Also it can be used to deflect black magick, and send it back to it’s source, which I will illustrate with a spell from a renowned author latter in text.

According to an old magickal treatise , called Book of Wings, from 13^th century, Onyx engraved with Camel’s head or a pair of goats among the Myrtles, confers practitioner the power, to conjure and subdue and control demons.  In fact the stone itself, was believed to draw attention of demons, and could possibly cause oppression by them, least worn along with Sard [6]

Onyx spell to induce nightmares

Mix some powdered black Onyx, with powdered  bread crumbs, and sprinkle very discreetly on the bed of the person You wish to induce nightmares to. If this is impossible try this:

Get a picture of person in question and write their name nine times on the back of the picture. Holding an black Onyx stone in Your projective stone, tell it what You want it to do, to cause nightmares and disrupt the peaceful sleep of N.N. Now place it on the picture. Light the incense made from Star Anise, Tobacco and Mullein leafs, and waft the smoke, or better yet blow it, so that it descends  on the Onyx and image of the person, which is bellow it. Do it for 8 more times , so total 9. Each time You do it You may speak some words of power.  Remove the stone in the morning and tear the pic up, saying how You release the person from the spell, least You wish it to be ongoing.  If You ever want to use the Onyx for something else, make sure to clean profoundly prior to use. You can for example bury it in ground for few days, or leave it in salt for 9-21 days.

NOTE: I do advocate casting harmful spells on anyone,  I composed this spell, and included it here for educational and illustrative purposes. Should You decide to use it,  I WILL NOT be held responsible for any possible outcomes. With that being said, use Your brain, think before You act, and this is a good advice in general.

Mental tonic

Make a Mint tea ( You can optionally add few leaves of Sage ) , let it cool down, and pour into a clean transparent glass, or bottle. Place an Onyx inside and then place , the glass/bottle with it atop a healing symbol, such as that one on the picture.  You can also use Cho ku Rei Reiki symbol, and I myself love to use “Flower of life” blueprint, to place bellow all sort of herbal remedies, tonics, and potions.  Solar kamea will do brilliantly as well.

Place Your hands over it and say some soothing words of power. Psalm 3^rd or something along these lines will do:

“Remove the confusion, banish the pain

Relieve the sorrow, make it vane
Restore the peace and grant the wisdom
Heal the mind , bless it power and freedom”

This is  best done sometimes before midday, ideal day for work being Sunday. Then let it sit on exposed to sunlight ( if possible ) from midday to one hour pm. Then remove the Onyx, sweeten with  honey and lemon If You wish, and drink to heal troubled, confused mind, and to end “all-over-the-place” or “air-headed “ state.

Scott Cunningham’s reversal spell with Onyx

I’ve mentioned before how Onyx can, and is used in defensive magick, and I promised an illustrative spell. Here it is:

“A defensive spell: Place a square mirror on your altar. Set a purple

candle before it so that the flame is reflected in the mirror.

Empower nine onyx stones with reflective, or defensive, energy.

Place one piece ofonyx three inches from the candle's right side. Then

place eight more stones in a semicircle around the candle, working

from right to left, until the candle is half-ringed with onyx toward you,

but is clear of it in front of the mirror.

Light the candle. Visualize the onyx as collecting the negativity

and sending it into the candle's flame. Then see the flame acting as a

lens, focusing the negativity and sending it into the mirror.

The mirror is a doorway onto the spiritual plane. The negative

energy is sent through it back to the original sender.” [7]

A wonderful and pragmatic spell, which  employs Saturnian correspondences and natural, protective qualities of Onyx, which I warmly recommend.

Protective and wealth Feng Shui cure  with Onyx

Not a spell per say,  but a rather good Feng shui advice,   quite nifty

Place a  couple of  Pi Yao amulet made from Onyx in Your workplace in Your money area or lucky direction ,  to both protect Your money, Yourself from evil, and inspire steady flow of  wealth  energies. [8]
